Recycling Experts needed for the nation's largest material characterization study!

MSW Consultants is assembling a team of recycling professionals who have a passion for research and transparency in the recycling industry, can work collaboratively, are detail oriented, and reliable.
Location: Fresh Kills Landfill, Staten Island, NY.
Full Reimbursement for Transportation, Travel Expenses: Reasonable travel expenses and transportation to/from hotel and work area provided for non-local candidates.
Position: Recycling Experts will receive sorted materials from primary Paper, Metals/Glass/Plastic, and Refuse sort tables, and will be responsible for a variety of specialized subsorts to investigate numerous research questions that directly impact NY City regulations and policies, including EPR, single use plastics, organics diversion, small format items, etc.
Selected individuals will be assigned a subsort station responsible for:

  • Distribution of beverage types for all bottles, cans and cartons
  • Separation of all plastics by resin
  • Assessing batteries and battery-operated discards
  • Comparing compostable vs non-compostable cups, coffee pods, and other paper items
  • Classifying plastic and paper retail bags and sleeves
  • Tabulating selected small format plastics
  • Categorizing flexible films by resin and type
  • Subsorting clothing textiles
  • Preparing subsamples for laboratory testing
Schedule: 8 AM - 4:30 PM, Monday - Friday, with occasional Saturdays

Seasons:

  • Season 1 October 10 - December 10, 2022 (Thanksgiving Day is off)
  • Season 2 March 27 - May 25, 2023
  • Season 3 July 10 - September 10, 2023

We will consider individuals who can commit to the full duration, single season, or partial season.

Pay: Ranges from $25/hr – $50/hr commensurate with experience PLUS a completion bonus at the end of successful scheduled work weeks to average $200/completed week.
PPE: Steel toed boots required. Gloves and all other PPE provided.

Qualifications:
College students may qualify based on academic background.

  • Knowledge of recycling, EPR, organics diversion, reuse, and source reduction
  • Capable of learning various categories of paper, plastic, glass, and other waste and recycling within waste streams
  • Ability to learn efficient sorting procedures and to sort materials accurately
  • Willing to work in the field as part of a large team
  • Reliable with ability to show up to work consistently and on a timely basis
  • Ability and willingness to wear all required personal protective equipment (PPE) for the duration of the day's work
  • Ability to provide and wear one's own steel toed boots
  • Ability to read and speak English clearly; bi-lingual (Spanish) speakers are a plus

Conditions and Physical Requirements:
Recycling Experts must be able to:

  • Walk, stand, bend, stoop, and kneel for extended periods of time per shift requirements
  • Lift, carry up to 50lbs
  • Use basic hand tools which may include but not limited to push broom, claw tool, shovel, and magnets
  • Speak, read, hear, and/or communicate effectively in English

Environmental Analyst

Job Description

Position Overview
The Environmental Analyst will perform field work, conduct qualitative and quantitative analyses, collaborate with project managers with task management, and assist with technical report drafting for both internal staff and external clients.

Responsibilities
The Environmental Analyst will complete the following tasks as well as additional tasks and responsibilities as necessary to achieve the Firm's strategic goals and objectives:

  • Conduct field work with strict adherence to protocols and procedures
  • Develop models within Microsoft Excel to manage and analyze large multifaceted data sets with team support
  • Conduct industry research independently
  • Assist with facilitation of meetings and workshops to gather relevant project information
  • Assist with drafting clear and concise technical reports with strong attention to accuracy
  • Manage various projects and client deadlines simultaneously
  • Operate efficiently and with professionalism in consideration of the waste and recycling industry dynami

Qualifications
Experience

  • 3+ years of professional experience in the environmental, waste/recycling, or consulting related industry
  • Experience in conceptualizing, designing, populating, and analyzing Microsoft Excel spreadsheets for customized technical and data analysis
  • Experience working with environmental organizations and groups a plus

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in an environmental, business, finance, statistics, or related field

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledgeable in any of the following areas: solid waste, recycling, or litter
  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word
  • Great communication skills (oral and written) with ability to communicate effectively with clients and staff of all levels on a consultative basis
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Strong organizational skills with ability to prioritize work to complete on time
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Willing to travel and assist or lead in-field projects

Travel
Up to 30% travel as needed on average.

Project Manager

Project Manager Responsibilities

  • Manages specific projects as defined by contractual agreements with clients
  • Understands client's perspective regarding the specific project objectives
  • Understands the technical aspects, goals, and objectives of the project
  • Participates and signs off on the scoping and budgeting of the project during proposal preparation
  • Performs project initiation tasks: confirms contract execution, communicates with office manager to establish QB files, finalizes project budget, initiates project communications with the client, prepares and submits initial data request, organizes project files
  • Holds internal project kick-off meeting with project staff including technical director, document specialist, IT director, assigned analyst(s)
  • Holds client kick-off meeting to establish roles, responsibilities, schedules, and routine meeting schedule
  • Maintains proactive and positive relationship with all project staff
  • Masters writing key deliverable sections such as executive summary, introduction, conclusions, and recommendations
  • Delegates tasks internally to project team and assigns work expectations
  • Performs as a consultant/analyst for assigned tasks within managed projects
  • Tracks task and project completion against budgeted level of effort, escalating to management if things are not going according to plan
  • Coordinates with client to provide draft and final deliverables in accordance with the contract
  • Identifies client's out-of-scope requests and applies steps to professionally address such requests

Qualifications

  • Experience as a project manager for multiple projects simultaneously in a technical field (environmental services, consulting, engineering, utilities)
  • Experience in the waste and recycling industry preferred
  • Bachelor or Master's degree in an Environmental Science, Biology, Economics, Business Administration, Engineering, Statistics, or related field.
  • Highly organized
  • Knowledgeable in one or more of the following areas preferred: solid waste, recycling, or organics management; transportation systems and logistics; local government purchasing and procurement; sustainability/zero waste; strategic planning and market research
  • Proven project management ability at a $50,000 to $500,000 professional services project scale
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Relentless focus on the contractual scope of service, the stated client objectives, and critical aspects of the work identified by management
  • Proactive, authoritative oral communication with ability to communicate effectively with clients and staff of all levels
  • Strong report writing skills
  • Great presentation skills preferred
  • Computer savvy with expertise and efficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Adobe Acrobat
  • Competent user of Microsoft Excel with capability of collaborating with technical staff to develop more complex technical analysis
  • Ability to perform project financial due diligence and remain on budget
  • Ability to prioritize and stay on task
  • Willingness to travel for conferences, client presentations, and in-field projects
