Statewide Waste Composition Study | 20240802_083320

The New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NHDES), with grant funding from the United States Environmental Protection Agency, commissioned a two-season, inaugural statewide waste composition study (WCS). As the first WCS completed in the state, the study establishes a baseline snapshot of disposed residential and commercial waste, along with construction and demolition (C&D) debris within New Hampshire. Comprehensive in nature, the WCS involved vehicle gate surveys, waste sample collection, manual sorting, and C&D visual assessments at multiple New Hampshire solid waste disposal facilities and commercial transfer stations. Based upon the data collected, the final report calculates the composition of disposed wastes, with results applied to 2023 statewide disposal tonnage data. The data provided in the report will be used by NHDES to inform current and future regulatory decision-making and the implementation of the state's Solid Waste Management Plan.
