Waste Reduction and Recycling Master Plan | Boston Mtn TS-DO-SW (3)

The Boston Mountain Solid Waste District encompasses Washington and Madison Counties in northwest Arkansas. The District and many other regional stakeholders share a goal to reduce the amount of waste entering the landfill while at the same time standardizing the recycling and waste diversion services across the region. The region is experiencing population and economic growth and the District wants to plan accordingly for maintaining consistent environmentally sound and economically feasible solid waste management services. The District hired MSW Consultants to complete a Waste Reduction & Recycling Master Plan covering the next 10 years. The project team will be conducting meetings with officials and stakeholders from the region to identify the challenges and layout potential programs for increased diversion of construction and demolition (C&D) waste and for organics. Standardizing recycling programs throughout the region is another key initiative to be evaluated as the District sees the need for more uniformity among the various programs that exist in the region. With over 28 licensed haulers in the District, an array of services are provided. Cities with at least 2,000 residents have, at a minimum, weekly curbside trash and recycling pickup. Moving the region to a standardized system should address contamination, help ease confusion and increase participation through uniform messaging.
