Waste Characterization Study

University of Kentucky | Lexington, KY | Completed: 2023

MSW Consultants was hired to conduct a follow-up Waste Composition Study at the University of Kentucky in 2022 to determine variability in the waste and recycling stream between different generator sectors, identify waste stream changes since the 2018 Study (also conducted by MSW), and identify opportunities for improved recycling and organics diversion programs. The 2022 project included the expansion of sampling to include the recycling stream. A one-season, week-long university-wide audit was performed, encompassing multiple generator sectors, including general campus buildings, residential student housing, dining facilities, football stadium, and hospitals. Materials were sorted into 66 material categories. MSW's report provided the basis for targeting materials by the various generator sectors and channeling program resources to increase diversion.
